今では、みんなが自分のボートを作るのではなく、家族用の大きなボートを一つだけ作ってみんなで詰め込むという伝統があります。予想通り、毎回失敗に終わりますが、それが私たちがこの作品を愛する理由です。長男はエンジニアで非常に真剣に取り組み、慎重にブロックを配置します。一方、下の2人はできるだけ多くの無作為なブロックや座席を叩きつけたいだけです。それから滝や障害物に向かって航海し、美しい怪物がゆっくりと崩れていくのを見守りました。ブロックがあちこちに飛び散り、誰かが悲鳴を上げ、船全体がひっくり返り、みんなが大笑いしていた。しかし、ここでこっそりと問題解決をし、クラッシュのたびに何が間違ったのか、次はどうやってもっと頑丈に作るかについて議論し、気づかないうちに学びます。一回のランで意外と遠くまで行け、子どもたちは大歓声を上げました。宝にたどり着くかどうかは重要ではなく、楽しいのは混沌とチームワークの方にあります。これは本当に一緒におどけて遊ぶゲームの一つになりました。

we have a tradition in build a boat now where instead of everyone making their own boat, we build ONE giant family boat and all cram onto it. this is, predictably, a disaster every single time, and thats exactly why we love it. my oldest is the engineer and takes it very seriously, carefully placing blocks, while the younger two just want to slap on as many random blocks and seats as humanly possible. then we set sail toward the waterfall and obstacles and just watch our beautiful monstrosity slowly come apart. blocks flying everywhere, someone shrieking, the whole boat tipping over, all of us laughing so hard. but here is the sneaky part, they actually problem solve, after each crash they argue about what went wrong and how to build it sturdier next time, learning without even realizing. we got surprisingly far one run and the kids full on cheered. it never matters if we reach the treasure, the fun is the chaos and the teamwork getting there. its become one of those games that is really about us being goofy together.
